Happy?- content would be the word I think.
There are bigger salaries out there, but would I be happy, fulfilled and satisfied – probably not.

I think everyone would want more. But i’m lucky enough that what i’m paid covers everything I need to not only study but also have a social life outside of work and go on holiday now and then. So i’m very grateful for what I have.

      Hi,

I earn enough money to do and buy the things I need and most of the things I want (mainly Lego) and for my family to do the same. My wife works too (she’s a teacher) so we have two salaries. I’m not worried about fancy cars or clothes, as long as I’ve got a good pair of hiking boots, I’m happy! It’s more important to me that I’m happy in my job – if you’re happy in your job, you will work better and perhaps start to earn a little bit more money – if you want to.

I think my salary is pretty decent, if I got a pay rise I would always be pleased – I’d rather work as a clinical scientist and do something I really enjoy that do a much more boring job and earn more. There’s lots more things to consider other than salary when it comes to jobs – where do you want to work, in a different country, or stay in a place close to your family? Do you want to work a standard 9-5 Monday to Friday, or would you prefer to work a more flexible schedule? Would you mind coming in to start experiments late at night or answering emails on the weekend? I’m lucky that my job offers me the kind of structure that I like.

I receive a scholarship rather than a salary and it covers the most basic living expenses. It’s actually a downgrade from what I was offered in Germany and most of my friends who stayed there are now making significantly more money, especially since the pound became weaker due to Brexit. But I see no reason to complain, it’s enough and I am hoping for a “real” salary once I finish my PhD.
