I had an organic chemistry lecturer at university who had a totally different style of teaching. He would have expected you to have through the work before coming in and would spend the whole time testing your understanding. He taught me that it is not about memorizing everything as you can’t know everything, but the key to doing well is understanding the ideas behind what you are learning and working from those when you are stuck.

I had loads and loads of different lecturers at university, I can’t remember all of them. I had a lecturer on my masters who was one of the earliest researchers working in bioinformatics and had been involved in loads of projects. She was different from other lecturers I had in that she taught us to be skeptical, to cross check information across different sources and use different sources of evidence to reach a conclusion. It was very refreshing compared to most lectures, where you are told about different theories or studies, but not often to make up your own mind on whether you think something is good science or not.

I really can’t remember one who stood out (sadly) but those with an enthusiasm for their subject usually infected us the students with that excitement.

I studied with the Open University and attended lots of weekend and evening classes. I had some many teachers, I can’t really pick one.

My favourite University teacher is actually one who never taught me, but somebody I work with now. She is a Professor and one of the World’s best pharmacists working in the field of paediatric medicine (for children). She is an inspiration to her students and other scientists and regularly ‘makes a difference’. She is as happy standing in front of international regulators as she is talking to her students – a great person.

I had a fantastic biochemistry professor. He was kind but very demanding and always fair. He always made sure that we understood the principles and didn’t just learn from the slides. He was also very down to earth and liked to chat with his students about any topic.
