I don’t think it has really – I’m lucky in that I have a pretty normal Monday to Friday job, and it’s very rare that I have to spend my evenings or weekends on my work. I have had to move to study in the past, but in both cases I didn’t mind doing it. The biggest impact it has on my life is that I get excited and bore my boyfriend talking about things at work that I thought were really interesting, but really weren’t.

I know other people whose personal lives have been effected – people have had relationships end because they have had to move somewhere for a position, or they have had to spend long periods of time away from their family. The tricky thing is that not every company or university will be doing research in the area you specialize in, so it’s common to have to move around the country or maybe even the world. But this kind of thing isn’t only a part of science careers, so don’t worry too much about it 🙂

      I don’t think it has.
Sometimes my friends call me the science-geek, but in a nice way.
And it’s usually me they ask to explain some new technologies or to calculate how to split the bill in a restaurant!
If I get excited by something in the lab – it’s hard to switch off and I can talk about it for hours – it’s hard to rein in the enthusiasm.

I think working in science gives you a very good set of skills which will help you throughout your life. I can’t give a specific example of how science has impacted my personal life, but I believe it has probably improved it. Modern science is more inclusive than most careers and where I work, people are judged on what they have to offer, rather than always being pre-judged. I think this makes me more accepting of different people and hopefully a better person.

Science has given loads of opportunities. I’ve been able to travel, meet some really smart people, make some lifelong friends. It is also the reason I moved to Bristol! Safe to say it influenced a lot of my life.
