I work at the University of Southampton as a Lecturer in Audiology (more about what that is later) and in Bournemouth as a Clinical Audiologist. I love working with people and problem solving, so my job is a great fit. When I am not working I run trail races all over the country and absolutely love the outdoors and mountains.

I have two jobs. I spend some of my week working in a busy audiology department in the South of England where help adults with hearing and balance problems. The main aspects of this job involve diagnostic testing and hearing aid fitting. For me, it is a perfect mix of problem solving, technology and people skills. I spend the rest of my week at the University of Southampton as a Lecturer in Audiology. In this role I train the next generation of audiologists and I carry out research in the area of occupational hearing testing.

When I’m at uni I spend a lot of time teaching practical sessions, like how to fit hearing aids or how to measure whether the middle ear is functioning normally. For my research work I collect data on how well people can hearing important commands for their job and spend time thinking about how we can better assess if people have good enough hearing to do their job. I am also the admissions tutor so I review applications for people interested in studying Audiology.
When I am working in the clinic I will typically see 8-10 patients / day and appointments are between 45-1 hour long. In a typically appointment I would spend time finding out about the patient’s hearing difficulties, assessing their hearing by measuring the quietest sounds they can hear using a special test called audiometry, and possibly carry out some other diagnostic tests to find out more about their hearing pathway. I may then proceed to fit a hearing aid, that is set up specifically for their hearing loss and the size and shape of their ear. I love it when patient’s tell me what a massive impact the hearing aid has had on their overall quality of life!
